Shortly after returning to Santa Barbara from New York in early 2001 following treatment for the second cancer episode (the first recurrence), my friend Gary handed me an article from the February 5, 2001, issue of The New Yorker magazine describing a renegade doctor in New York. Gary correctly assumed I’d be interested in the article because my doctor, a highly-regarded cancer surgeon, was quoted numerous times regarding his opinion of the renegade's treatment protocol. Ironically, it turns out the renegade was a student of the master at Cornell medical school.
The renegade doctor was not getting much respect. His cancer treatment protocol is based on nutrition, enzymes, and detoxification. “If there was a signup sheet at the National Institutes of Health to run me down with a truck, people would stand on line for hours” he is quoted as saying.
But seven years later he has a clinical trial underway to compare his enzyme-nutritional therapy with the best chemotherapy available for the treatment of advanced pancreatic cancer. It seems that a pilot study provided remarkably successful results.
Anyway, I completed a patient summary today and sent it to him by USPS express mail. It should arrive at his NY office tomorrow or Friday, and they promise to review it within 24 hours of receipt.
Who knows – maybe I’ll be making a trip to NY after all.

Meanwhile, tomorrow will be a day of consultation with my oncologist and Chinese herbalist. My head is starting to spin.
